Final entry due by: Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

 Questions:

1)    In the story “The Devil and Tom Walker,“ Washington Irving engaged readers both in America and in Europe for many reasons – sometimes conflicting ones.  Look at the story again through the eyes of each of the following people.  What reasons would you give for recommending the story to others?   Give specific reasons for each of the following:  a revolutionary (radical), a puritan (conservative), an American politician, and a banker.

2)    Through statements Washington Irving makes about Tom Walker, his wife, and his community, what messages is Irving communicating about the following topics:  women (lines 31-37), the Puritan attitude (lines 115-118), the slave trade (lines 224-227), and moneylenders (lines 228-230).

3)    How does “Thanatopsis” reflect Romantic notions of nature and democratic values? Explain why.

4)    Reread lines 8-10 in “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls” AND lines 25-32 in “A Psalm for Life.”  Consider what happens to the footprints in each poem.  Based upon this and other images, how would you say Longfellow’s outlook on life and death in each poem is similar?  Explain your reasoning.

5)    Recall from Holmes’ biography on page 248 that the poem “Old Ironsides” was instrumental in saving the USS Constitution.  What techniques and details used in the poem might have motivated readers to act?  Cite evidence from the poem to support your answer.

6)    Review the elements of transcendentalism listed on page 369.  Then, reexamine “Self-Reliance” and “Nature” identifying key ideas that reflect each tenet of transcendentalism.

7)    Writer Henry James argued that Emerson had no concept of the evil that exists in the world.  In James’ words, it was “a side of life as to which Emerson’s eyes were thickly bandaged…He had no great sense of wrong…no sense of the dark, the foul, the base.”  In your opinion, is this a valid criticism of Emerson?  Use evidence and explain why or why not.

  1. Destiny G. hour 5) In the story "The Devil and Tom Walker" it grabbed the eye of many American and European people. This story was very interesting and caught my attention on what the story was about. The story had many interesting parts through out the story. Everyone has their own opinion on what they felt about the story. If I were to recommend this story to anyone I would recommend a revolutionary person and or a banker. My reason for recommending a revolutionary person is because the fact of a revolutionary person knows so much and cares strongly for fighting for their rights knowing whats right and wrong. because of knowing these things would the decision Tom made was right or wrong for the situation his wife put him in even if he did not want to do it but had no other choice. have wealth or stay poor. This was hard decision making for Walker if he wanted wealth there was only one other way to do so. As for recommending a banker for this story , I believe this story would be good for a banker to read not only because it has a lot to do with money and wealth but being a banker being an good decision maker. If bankers love and care for money wealth being wealthy and as wealthy as possible is worth making big decisions and deals with the devil just to have wealth worth it at all. Having wealth and being wealthy can cause many problems and conflict. As a banker wealth is a very important part for them. Having to decide between continuing to be poor or having wealth. having wealth the right way by working for it to get it or making deals with the devil worth its consequences or is it all just greed.

    1. I believe that the story "The Devil and Tom Walker" is a great story. it shows you the things that people really believed in, what would stand for or back down on. yes you are right it depends on the person but only boring people make a story boring. yes it would help a banker but more so a newbie just to get them ready for what anything can happen.

    2. I would have to agree with you on selecting a revolutionary person and/or a banker. "The Devil and Tom Walker" was a very interesting story to read. The story leads you to visualize on what type of person that I would recommend it to. I agree with your recommendations.

    3. I agree with your opinion about recommending this to a banker because this story teaches things they should not do just for money. They could learn some great morals and lessons from this story. By reading this story it would hopefully guide the banker in the right way from understanding how bad greed for money can be.

    4. I have no choice but to agree with your recommendation for this story to a banker; but I would not only recommended to a banker but also to the average human being because jobs were not just simply created for all of us to make profit, but to help society function as a whole. It appears that now a days, as well is back then people use(d) jobs simply to gain profit. Gaining profit is okay however the greed in human nature seem to take these things as liability. Greed kills society as well as the soul.

  2. (Jackira V. Period 7) In the story of “ The Devil and Tom Walker” states four very important topics that expresses what Toms opinion was.Women ( lines 31-37) which states that Toms wife was a abusive wife to him physical and mentally. The slave trade (lines 224-227) shows that Toms believes and any money in the world would make a poor decision to be in the business of slave trade. Moneylenders (lines 228-230)Tom had to extort bonds, foreclosure mortgages, and drive merchants in to bankruptcy, which makes him a Usurer which the book states.
Many people in the romantic era believed you had to become one with nature. He poem is a good example of romantic literature because it displays the elements of man becoming one with nature, humanitarian and feelings verse reason.
Both poems have similar things in common has in “The Tide Rises..” is more somber, humans are dwarfed by nature and not much remembered let me know that the footprints were there but were washed away. In “psalm of life” individuals can have an enduring impact on the world letting me know that the footprint remain right were there at. Denied in “The Tide Rises..”, ‘ Traveler hastens to town mean people are always trying to avoid death. Animals and tides shows that life goes on even after death.

    1. I also agree with you're explanation of "The Devil and Tom Walker". There were many moments in the story when it was many hard decision making choices. Deciding if wealth and being wealthy worth the actions he had taken. People should over think if these actions they make are good decisions or not.

    3. I agree with your opinion about people in the romantic believing you had to become one with nature . Lots of poems and stories from that era were based around that. And they did make lots of comparisons of man and nature in those stories too , to relate nature to humans an life.

    4. I agree with your opinion on Irving's opinion on women. Tom Walkers wife was very abusive to him. She also was a mean person and always mad. The message he gave out on women were that they were abusive physically and mentally

  3. (Hope A. period 7) #4: In the poem, “The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls” the footprints get washed away of someone that has lived and passed by that way. In the poem “Psalm of Life” the footprints are used in the “Sands of Times” that wasn’t washed away at all, it will remind us of a good man who passed by. Both poems “The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls” and “Psalm of Life” both states that death is apart of life. In “Psalm of life,” it tells people to always trust that the next day will be greater than the last. In “The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls” it says a person’s life will end, but the world want end.

#2: In the story, “The devil and Tom Walker” (lines 31-37) Washington Irving describes Tom Walker wife as a women beater because all she did in the story was abuse him and down talk him like he was a nobody, (line224-227). Tom Walker says, that anyone who finds money in the world would make a bad choice of becoming a slave trader, (lines228-230). Tom Walker had a lot of moneylenders he worked with bonds, foreclosures, and mortgages.

3.) It talks about making us feel assured about ourselves, saying that nature can make pain less painful. It also talks about how peacefully we should die instead of just dying on impact. The Romantic notion is has in it is by the way he wrote this. Saying not to be scared when it's time for us to die, and just making sure that we know that we're all going to the same place even if we did bad on Earth.

    1. I agree with what you said. It advises us to not fear death, just be aware of it. I also believe that's a really nice lesson. If you fear death you spend your life in a fesrful state and might not live life to it's fullest. But if you're aware of it and not fearing it, it lifts a burden off of your shoulders and allows you to live life without the dear of it ending.

  5. ( Myia Vales, period 7 ) #2- Washington Irving gave the reader a sense of how he perceives women, in "The Devil and Tom Walker". The way he made women seem in this story was mean, cold, and heartless. Even abusive in a way. He expressed that he feels like the slave trade was not a good thing and not a good money choice. He was also trying to make a point that moneylenders were not good either. It also gives a message that puritans were hypocritical and fakes in a way.

#4- In both the poems " The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls "and " A Psalm For Life " he brings up footprints to relate. In one story they get washed away by the water and nobody ever see's them again, and in the other the footprints help make a path and are still there. In both poems he has the same outlook on life because in both life ends and life goes on without you. He also expresses that people should live their life to the fullest while they can because it doesn't last forever.

#7 In my opinion that was not a valid criticism of James Henry , because Emerson wanted to write about nature and all of the things he appreciated in life. Its like James wanted Emerson to have a negative outlook on life and talk about lots of horrible things. Emrson had the right to write about the way he felt about life and nature, because that was how he perceived it .

    1. I agree with what you said about, the poem the "The Tide Rises, The Tides fall" He expressed how life goes on without you by providing you with an image of the tides washing the footprints away but in the other poem, you are right, the footprints lingered on and I felt that peom showed us, that if we achieve great things in life. Our legacy still lingers even after we are gone.

    2. I agree about James Henry's criticism being invalid. Emerson fancied talking about the things he enjoyed, and that made him happy. He knows that things come up that aren't always easy, but he promotes moving passed those times in his poetry.

2)Washington Irving, in the story "The Devil And Tom Walker" gives out a message about women. He basically says that women are very Nagy. Also he sends out a message that women are gullible. He gives out a message that the Puritans were smart by making an impregnable fort so the colonist wouldn't get through and they used as a refuge for their squaws and children. Also he says that the puritans held incantations and made sacrifices to the evil spirits. Irving says in the story that the slave trade came from sacrifice of the white men.

4)Based on lines 8-10 in "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" and lines 25-32 in “A Psalm for Life" and other images, Longfellows look on life and death in both poems were alike. In both poems he used a footprint as an example of life and death. He gave a great example by basically saying that footprints or people are here and then they die which would be the footprint being washed away. in " The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" he says that people are there but when they leave they are forgotten. In the poem " Psalm Of Life" the poem gives out a different meaning from the first poem. It gives out a meaning that when people leave the world they are not forgotten.

1)I would recommend the story " The Devil And Tom Walker" to a conservative person. I would recommend this to them because keeping a family tradition might not always be a good idea. Sometimes being a conservative person can go wrong. Especially for those who are religious and don't plain on going to hell or dealing with the devil. Also I would share this story with a revolutionary person. Because they are people who know wrong from right and fights for their rights. a revolutionary person would connect with this story because tom walker was a person who stood on the things he said. Such as when he said he was going to always keep a bible with him and be a godly person the rest of his life.

#3 I believe that many people in the Romantic era believe thst mans purpose was to become one with nature. They felt power and wisdom comes from nature. They also believed in humanitarian which was an elevated common man or noble savage. The poem expresses the idea of reuniting with loved ones. Basically nature is described as a cause of happiness and wise doings.

#3 Through. Stamens Washington Irving makes about Tom Walker, his wife and his community Irving communicating about the following topic is woman, the puritan attitude, the slave trade in the money lenders is that the message with women they are giving is it is better not to marry than to marry a woman who argues in fight . In lines 115 to 117 is said since the red men have been exterminated by you white savages, I amuse myself by presiding at the persecutions of Quakerism Anabaptist. By them saying that the meaning is that the puritans are hypocritical in their treatment of other groups. The slave trade this however torn resolutely refused he was bad enough in all consclence but the devil himself could not tempto turn slave trader basically saying that slave trading is worse than any of the Devils other amusements. And last but not least with the money meters, money later take advantage of those most in need.

#4 In the story the tide rises the tide falls I believe that it is saying the tide rising and falling represents life so this means that life is like a wave, having ups and downs. Or it can also mean that the footprints represents a person, so this means that someone is erased or forgotten. In the Psalms of life I believe Longfellow is saying that you leave an impact of the world even after you've died and gone. He may even mean leaving positive footprints that help people who come after you take heart again. Both poems is about life that if a person dies his life just goes away the footprints in the sand are like the persons goals in life and the ocean waves erase them just like nothing ever happened or occurred .

    1. Tynisia I partially agree with you , when you say life is like a wave that's correct ,life does has it's up and downs . I also agree with you when you think that the footprint in "The Tide rises,The Tide falls " represents a person .Now where you say that the "footprint " or " person is forgotten is where I disagree with you , see just because a person or object is gone doesn't mean that they are forgotten completely .

2.)Irving projects a message that women were abusive, dominance and heartless while the men weren't .The slave trade was an action of selling your soul or working for the devil himself. The message behind The moneylenders is that they Portray another version of the devil. They both have the same characteristics which are knowing how to get what they want, and also being impatient.

4.)In the poems titled "The Tide rises ,The Tide falls" and "The Psalm for life" authored by Longfellow . These poems have a metaphor which are demonstrated with the footprints in the sand.Longfellow's outlook on life and death are similar, the Similarities are no matter what happens life still goes . In "The tide rises,The tide falls " there's a footprint in the sand but the waves came and washed it away, basically The footprint is to represent you or memories that you have which are fading or faded away.

Alexandria you wrote your statement very well, you met all of the points and also included your examples, and yes I agree Irving made the wife seem as if she was just like a man,the aggressive one and it showed Tom Walker being more like the female who step down from the male, his wife had the upper hand.

  10. (Jacqueline J. hr 7) #2: Washington Irving viewed women as mean, cruel, selfish, abusive, and in total control. In the story he made Tom's wife big and mean. She was very abusive and completely wore the pants in the relationship. This made his views on women pretty clear.I get the vibe that Irving felt the Puritans were hipper critical. The Puritans prided themselves on being very Godly and church oriented but at the same time they would do things for themselves that was not christian-like behavior. The slave trade was another example. Most of the people who owned and sold slaves were PURITANS. Selling and buying slaves was not at all christian-like behavior, which furthur proved how the Puritans were very hipper critical. Lastly, Irving felt that the monylenders were just as bad as a fevil if not worse. They both used people to get what they really wanted.

#7: Honestly, I felt that this was NOT a valid critism for Emerson. What James said about Emerson basically having no clue about evil or the sense of the dark was completely opinion based and not at all factual. Emerson wrote about what he believed and he viewed things for himself. James simply had other views, but that does not mean Emerson did not know what he was talking about.

    2) Washington Irving is say that Tom Walker’s wife is very mean and violent with her words and not only her words but, she is violent physically as well, he is saying that at the time women were stronger than the men thought and that they could be meaner if needed. Irving is saying that the puritan people and their attitude is that the puritans think that they are better than everyone because the red men are gone and they think that they are the only good people. Irving is saying that tom walker is a man with a twisted mind and that he should hire slaves to work but he did not, because Tom did not want to get pulled into a situation that makes him even worse, he is messed up enough. Irving is saying that the moneylenders are bad people because when they loan someone money they expect the person they lent money to, to pay them back with a high amount of interest.
    4) In each poem the footprints represent memories, in “the tide rises, the tide falls” and “a psalm of life” there is a man, in both the poems this man is called “the traveler”, there is a beach and the traveler is walking on the beach leaving his foot prints behind, those footprints (memories) are washed away by the waves of life and are no more. Longfellow’s outlook on life and death in each poem are similar because in life we leave memories and once we die those memories are remembered for just a little while and then they are forgotten, “the footprints (memories) are swept away by the waves of life or should I say death”.

Q #2: The messages Irving was trying to say in lines (31-37) about women was that normally in a relation ship between guy and girl, the guy is the "mean and agreesive" one. Now in this case, its the girl being "agressive and mean." In lines (115-118) he mentions that the red heads have been killed by whites; wich the red heads are the Witches who work for him. This tells us that he does not like the puritan beleive since the Salem witch trials. He is saying that the slave trade is bad, and is controlled by the devil in lines 224-227. Also, the moneylenders; as he referred to them. They are pretty much the people the devil controls and has their soul. Like Tom Ealker later on in the story.

Q #3: "Thanatopsis" reflects romantic notions of nature by pretty much describing the world as our bed..where we lay and play. We go out in the woods and anything is posible. It described man falling in love with nature, or as he referred to as "she." That the world has had life and death. When one dies, another is born.

Q #4: Longfellow Explained life and death similar in both poems (The Tide Falls and the Tide Rises, and The Phsalm of Life) since he used footprints on both. He used the footprints to describe life. Basically he explained the life cycle, because you live and walk your way and leave memories..but then thise memories fade away and someone else remakes them, by taking your path. Then he also made it seem like death was not a big deal. Basically, everybody will die at some point..youre just waiting for it to happen and when it does, someone else would take your place.

    1. I agree that Irving switched the roles of men being aggressive and mean to the lady being aggressive and mean, she did really play a big part in being a very bad person to her husband.

  13. Tationna W. Period 4 4). In the "Tide Falls" the footprints disappear. Meaning when you embark on the journey of life, you leave behind the trail you took from the beginning of your life until the end of it. Sometimes if the path wasn't that impact full it vanishes quickly. That's displayed in lines 9-10 that state "Efface the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls" Those line tell you that you come and go and if your footprints weren't that visible, they'll easily disappear. In the "Tide Falls" the footprints vanish.

Entailed in the poem "A Psalm for Life" the footprint linger in the sand until enough time passes away they are washed away, being scarcely remembered. "And departing, leave behind us, Footprints on the sands of time" One day we'll just be a memory For better or for worse? It's what you make it.

Longefellow's outlook on life and death in each poem focuses on what you leave behind. After we pass, we only have our footprints left "in the sands of time." If someone's journey wasn't that impactful, there footprints wash away but if they've made great strife in life and they conquer some of life's challenges, they're recognized for there great work even after they're gone.

6). Self Reliance expresses two out of the three key tenets of Transcendentalism. A theory that truth exist beyond reason and experience and people should follow there own beliefs.

Nature expresses two key tenets also. That one should believe in there own believes and that humankind, nature, and God are all intertwined. "Yes it is certain that the power to produce this delight, does not reside in nature but in man, or in a harmony of both. Both of the stories combined display all key tenets of Transcendentalism.

7). Yes, Henry James criticism of Emerson is valid. Emerson believed in Transcendentalism which stressed individuality, non deformity, and intuition. People who believed in Transcendentalism thought intuition was genius and the only direct knowledge you received. They also believed there was no evil. Everyone was good. Even if they did something wrong Transcendentalist believed no wrong existed. As long as they believed in themselves, they were okay. In "Self Reliance" he states "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion: that the wide universe is full of good..." that statement displays Emerson had no sense of evil.

Washington Irving introduces Tom Walker as a greedy, sarcastic man who only loves money. His wife was just as greedy and selfish as him, however scary and abusive. Walker even made a humorous reference to her saying that he was more afraid of his wife than the devil.
This poem also has a humorous view of Puritan attitude. The Puritans at this time seemed very hypocritical to Tom Walker in the stories Tom was as well because in his fear of his time ending, he suddenly became a violent churchgoer and he carried Bibles for protection, giving extremely wild praises to God, in hopes that he could be saved. This story is basically a humorous way that Washington Irving used in order to communicate his view that hypocrisy could be shown by the extreme behavior in church.
Washington Irving expressed his view also in slave trade, basically saying that it was the devil's work and its an evil thing that he'd never stoop so low as to do. He however, did agree with money lending because he wanted the money under any circumstances. Later on in the story, after taking this job, he shows extreme greed and carelessness for others; hence the term hypocricy.

The poem, "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls", basically gives us the overall idea, that who we are and our mark on this world, our footprints, will altogether disappear behind us. The earth will continue to spin no matter what. However the poem, "A Psalm of Life" tells us that even though our footprints disappear "to act that each tomorrow find us farther than today."

Thanatopsis or "view of death", was basically a beautiful piece of work expressing that nature has the answer to what lies beyond this life. He basically suggested that you take Nature's hand and let Nature be your comforter in death. Nature basically started taking over and speaking for herself in the poem, telling you that you will die like every other human being. She says death shouldn't be feared, but rather embraced with open arms and an open mind; we all die, no matter how famous, unknown, rich or poor we all die.

  15. In the stories Self-Reliance and Nature both says things about transcendentalism which means an intellectual movement that emphasized the dignity of the individual and advocated a simple, mindful life. In the story "Self-Reliance" it tells a key tenet of a theory that "transcendent forms" of truth exist beyond reason and experience; every individual is capable of discovering this truth. In the story "Nature" it tells a key tenet of a belief that humankind, nature, and God are all interconnected.

2.) Based off of the passage that Washington Irving stated about Tom Walker, his wife and their community , I realized that the message that he was trying to make was that women some times had the upper hand, for a example Tom Walkers wife ruled over him and always was the firm handed one who took charge in situations.
In lines ( 115-118 ) I noticed that the puritan attitude seemed cocky and he acted as if he was all that and that he was also proud of what he do.The puritan tried to come off as kind of persuasive and acted as if he was like no other person that Tom Walker had met.
The devil was trying to at first convince Tom Walker to do slave trading but Tom Walker refuse,so the devil took another route and announced a idea that Tom Walker couldn't turn down. The Devil made a different type of deal which would still make him lots of profit, the devil was anxious but without being hesitant Tom Walker agreed to become a usurer.
In lines ( 228-230 ) is simply informing me about how greedy and conniving Tom Walker and the devil is, the devil offered him the bogus deal and told him how much money he could leand out to people but Tom Walker had so much greed that he double the price.

3.) “Thanatopsis” reflect Romantic notions of nature and democratic values by displaying the elements of man becoming one with nature and humanitarian. It also shows examples of nature being the creator and the solution of death, he even mentioned slavery in the poem quite a few times which showed examples of democratic values. My example are lines ( 75-80 )
So live, that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan which moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, scrounged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

6.) The elements of transcendentalism "Self-Reliance" reflect it based off of this line from the poem, " Henceforth, please God, forever I fore go the yoke of men's opinions. I will be lighted-hearted as a bird, and live with God. I find him in the bottom of my heart, I hear continually his voice therein. " They're talking about a form of god which is a example of transcendentalism. The poem "Nature" reflect transcendentalism based off these lines in the poem "So Nature deals with us, and takes away our playthings one by one, and by the hand leads us to rest so gently, that we go scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay, being too full of sleep to understand how far the unknown transcends the what we know." Their form of transcendentalism is that they believe nature is connected with humkind.

    1) 'The Devil and Tom Walker' short story can have a diversity of themes depending on whose perspective it is being looked from. If looking from a revolutionary's attitude, it would enlighten the reader that sometimes making a change in order to gain prosperity may seem like the only best choice. If the perspective is coming from a Puritan's attitude, it would encourage the reader to be content with life and stick to the status quo because although you may gain prosperity, your satisfaction will last temporarily. A banker might find this story interesting because it would teach other bankers to be more wise on where they invest their funds in to prevent bankruptcy. American politicians would most likely recommend this story because it shows not even those in high positions have control over governed controlled businesses so it's best to "play the game by the rules".

    2) Irving uses his characters to make his general opinions have a voice throughout the story. For instance, he perceived women as loud, hot tempered and violent beings when he described Tom's wife. He also felt the Puritans believed Christian groups beliefs were heretical to theirs and were right and just. Irving justifies slavery was wrong and not just when the devil asks Tom to partake in slave trade but Tom strongly objects. He then encourages Tom to become a moneylender. Moneylenders are typically greedy because the are always looking to gain more than what they give. This is also Tom's bad habit.

    4) As humans we will always make footprints in the sand throughout the sands of time. Our footprints symbolize our life. However, those who make a great impact on this world, their footprints will remain even when the tide washes away. The tide washing the footprints away symbolizes our death.

  18. 2- Irving makes it seem like women aren’t very pleasant people at this time. He portrays them as bossy and gullible people who aren’t the brightest. He also makes it seem as if they are abusive and violent by the way he says Tom Walkers wife treats him. He makes puritans seem smart and knowledgable because they made forts for colonists. Although they may be smart, they do, however, think very highly of themselves. The Slave trade was always crazy because slave owners wanted nonslave owners to own slaves, but Walker did not feel that that was right. Money loaners were snakes according to Irving in this short story. Money loaners would add a high interest on the money they would lend and it was quite unfair.

6-“Trust thyself” is the principal of Transcendentalism. Self reliance by Emerson has a major theme of trusting yourself and your judgment. It even says it in the poem. Another key tenet to transcendentalism is the belief that human-kind, nature, and god are all connected in a way. Nature by Emerson shows that connection and shows it through the perspective of a true believer.

7- I do NOT agree with Henry James’s criticism because I think Emerson just focused on the better things in life. Still knowing dark and evil is there and not acknowledging it is different than not knowing it exists. Emerson didn’t focus on every bad thing that’s ever happened to him, he tried to move past those part and get to the nice and better, rewarding parts.

3)The poem "Thanatopsis" reflects the romantic notions of nature and democratic values by how it shows the elements of man becoming a part with nature, and humanitarian. The poem shows many examples of how man should become one with nature. The poem states that nature has an appeal of beauty. These passages, "The golden sun, the planets, all the infinite host of heaven are shining on the sad abodes of death," "Earth, that nourished thee, shall claim thy growth." These are well written exmaples of how nature is described as a cause of happiness and wise doings and of becoming a part of nature.
    4) Based on the passages and the imagery I could say that Longfellow outlook on life and death I'm each poem is similar by how he believes that even tho we die we can and should leave a positive outlook on life. In my opinion I feel that his outlook is that no matter what we encounter we can always overcome and conquer to make a difference and stand out because life is real, life is earnist, the tide rises and the tide falls.
    5) The techniques and details used in the poem "Old Ironside," might have motivated the readers act by it use of words and rhyme. The use of word and vocabulary were well used and written by how all the word flow to create a rhyme.
    6) The identify key ideas that reflect each tenet of the transcendentalism are; quest for the truth, individualism, connection between mind and nature, dislike of materialism, and rely on intuition.
All of these questions were a bit of a challenge to answer but I feel like I learned a bit from each and every one I have answered. The romanticism chapter is a bit confusing but understanding.
